Photos of the Year 2021

In 2021, I photographed 171 soccer games. With my last game of the year shot on October 30th, 2021, this is an average of 1 game for every 1.77 days! In all, I shot over 320,000 photos and published over 21,000 photos this year. Here is a gallery of my 20 favorite shots of 2021 and some of my thoughts behind them.

I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoyed capturing them!

"Rivalry"

I always look forward to rivalry games and (in this area) the "Fight for 55" game between Panther Creek High School and Green Hope High School is as good as it gets.

This game started aggressive and ended with the same intensity. I love the dynamic body positioning and sheer determination for possession captured in this shot.

"Elation"

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time for this shot as Nelson Martinez put a volley from outside of the box into the back of the net.

The shot and the celebration happened so fast, I had no choice but to keep shooting with my 400mm f/2.8 lens and was happy to grab this photo in a 12 shot burst before he ran towards me with his teammates and cropped himself out.

"Air Battle"

Rarely do I get a  shot of a defender and a striker fighting for a ball mid-air and both facing me. My preferred positioning on the field (on the ends between the corner flag and the goal) typically gets me the back of one of the players.

I typically shoot very low but this was shot from an even lower than usual position while sitting on the ground instead of my stool. I had decided to switch camera bodies in the middle of the game play which is never a great idea. So when the play developed right in front of me, I shot from the ground. I am pleased with the results.

"Extension"

I always try to grab extra shots of keepers during warmups before the game. Even though my glass is long enough to reach the far side of the field, I rarely am able to capture a shot that is completely unobstructed. After all, there are 21 players between me and the far keeper.

This shot was during warmups and my camera dial had moved to single shot instead of continuous high speed  so I am very grateful I was able to capture it!

"Grab"

Typically sports photos should always include the ball but I really like this photo showing the tangling of arms and grabbing of jerseys in this photo.

In realtime, it is sometimes difficult to see how much contact there is off the ball. This battle went on for 90 minutes during this game—the Carolina Railhawks Throwback game at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary NC.

After covering North Carolina FC for so many games, it was really cool to see them in these bright orange throwback jerseys.

"Pounce"

I had the pleasure of photographing this young man for the entire fall high school season. He was always fearless around the ball and the net. I like this photo in particular because I feel like it conveys just how committed he is to pounce on this ball.

I love freezing action in such a way where your mind fills in the blanks of what happens next. This visual tension is why I love storytelling with still photos.

"Legend"

As soon as Nazmi Albadawi, the longtime player and Captain for North Carolina FC announced his retirement, I started planning this shot. This is Naz walking out of the tunnel one last time with friends, family, and fans cheering him on.

I got to this spot early in anticipation and shot this with my 24-70mm f/2.8 on my d750 while sitting on the ground with my back up against the back of the LED boards. I feel so privileged to have photographed Naz in his last couple of seasons for NCFC and was thrilled to see the club used this photo in their retirement presentation.

"The Return"

I love this photo for 2 reasons. This was Carli Lloyd's last game versus our hometown NC Courage before her retirement and I had always wanted the opportunity to photograph her as a player.

The second reason, as you can see from the crowd in the background, is this was the first time I truly felt that sports was back from the pandemic. The crowd was electric! And after many months of shooting games with empty stands, it was nice to see a full crowd in the background again.

"You Good?"

This past fall I have started to strategize on new things to shoot in games. In the past, when teams set up for free kicks I would typically focus on the shooter not the wall. It always seemed more beneficial to capture the shooter coming at me versus the backs of players in the wall.

Recently, I have found success in capturing those precise moments when defenders in the wall look back towards the keeper to make sure they are lined up correctly. I like this one a lot because the player giving the thumbs up is taking control of the wall confidently and collaboratively.

"Simplicity"

When photographing soccer you are constantly battling distracting colors and backgrounds. In youth games they are brightly colored chairs and cones and water bottles causing visual distractions. In high school games, it is banners and backpacks. And in pro games the sponsors and advertisers pay to get their logos in the background on purpose.

In the beginning of this year's NC Courage season, photographers were relegated to designated areas in the stands. This created some weird challenges. When you are shooting down onto the field, all you have is a sea of green grass with no horizon lines to create perspective or a sense of place.

In this case, however, I really like the simplicity and contrast of the player's red kit to the green grass background. This was shot during warmups as Kumi Yokoyama, forward for the Washington Spirit fed balls to teammates in a shooting drill.

"Leap"

The 2020-2021 high school men's soccer season was an interesting one. The pandemic caused a delay in the season forcing these men to play their senior season January through March instead of September through November.

Playing a season in the winter meant darker lighting at game time, muddy fields with dead grass and unpredictable divots. This was shot in the first round of the 4A NCHSSA playoffs when Panther Creek High School traveled to Charlotte to take on the top ranked Myers Park Mustangs.

Almost the entire game was shot in the cold, pouring rain. The lighting was poor and the rain caused havoc with my auto focus but I was able to grab a few keepers.

This one, in particular, may be my favorite shot of the year.

"Excitement"

As much as I love shooting tackles and collisions on the pitch, this year I focused on improving my shots off the ball.  One of the things I started to do when the team was coming towards me is to focus on the shooter until right after the shot is taken and then immediately scan towards half field to see players running toward them in celebration.

This was one of those times. In the 21' of the game, Jess McDonald scored for the 50th time in her NWSL career at the near side goal and immediately turned her back towards me. I quickly pointed my camera back towards half field and saw Courage midfielder, Debinha running towards her.

This photo was the result!

"Pursuit"

This set up is one of my favorite to capture: a player running towards me in pursuit of a bouncing ball. I typically get this shot with 2 opposing players side by side. Rarely am I able to get both faces with one player in pursuit of the other.

I also really like this photo because upon first glance it almost looks like a color isolated photo on a black and white background. It just happens that the early evening lighting on the trees created this effect.

"Whip"

This scrimmage versus the University of North Carolina Women's soccer team was in preparation for the 2021 NC Courage NWSL season. After a particularly brutal cold and rainy preseason match a few nights prior versus Wake Forest, the Courage took on UNC in a beautifully sunny and chilly game.

This game was particularly memorable for me because after a long pandemic-induced relegation to the bleachers for the previous season, this marked the first time back shooting from the field-level.

I like how the whip of UNC's Avery Patterson's hair in this shot conveys a lot of motion.

"Stiff Arm"

This is another example of how much you can miss in the moment. When I shot this sequence I had no idea that North Carolina FC midfielder Peter Pearson was getting stiff armed in the face. It wasn't until I started culling the images that I saw it.

Peter got the last laugh as he won this 50/50 ball in the end.

"The Wall"

The teams I have coached know this and certainly my kids have heard me say this incessantly: nothing bothers me more than seeing defenders in a wall turn their backs during the kick.

Fortunately, these Courage players are professionals :)

"High Step"

Panther Creek High School set the tone in the very first game of the season with a 2-1 win against Jordan High School. This team was a lot of fun to watch and capture.

From a photo point of view, I like shooting at Jordan High School's soccer field because of the tarp along the far side's fence that creates a nice clean black background.

"Hug"

This photo was taken at the conclusion of the game between the NC Courage and Houston Dash. It was a memorable game. The Courage had 2 goals disallowed due to offsides and a questionable call in the 2nd half led to a set piece goal by Houston.

This was the first time the Houston Dash had defeated the Courage in NC and this hug by Houston Dash's Megan Oyster captured the feeling of elation.

"Just Wide"

Getting great photos of near side keepers is very difficult when you're positioned on the end lines. You typically only get shots of their backs or some shots as they are walking back towards their goal after a punt. This shot is a result of doing my homework.

Before the game, during warmups I was playing close attention to where the Athens Drive strikers were shooting. One forward, in particular was constantly shooting low and to the far post.

Late in the first half of the game, that forward had a breakaway. As the Panther Creek keeper came out of the box, I decided to focus my viewfinder low and at the keeper. I thought I could possibly get a great shot of keeper gloves grabbing a ball.

The shot was taken and deflected and I stayed focused on the keeper's face as she watched the deflection go wide right of the goal.

"Reign"

Shooting soccer in the rain is a blessing and a curse. It is miserable getting soaked, worrying about your gear, and wiping the water from your viewfinder. It's also challenging to grab focus when you have huge raindrops not only throwing off your auto-focus but blurring your viewfinder.

At this particular game, the rain held up until just before halftime so I was able to stay out of the initial downpour. and put on my ThinkTank Emergency Rain Jackets on my gear. All 2nd half it had a steady rainfall. In the end you sometimes have to just spray and pray as it's virtually impossible to chimp any photos when everything is wet (including your hands).

I love this photo of Jess McDonald and was super psyched to see when she shared it with her followers.
